I'm a bit of an eclectic mess 🙂 I've been a programmer, journalist, editor, TV producer, and a few other things.

I'm currently working on my second novel which is complete, but is in the edit stage. I wrote my first novel over 20 years ago but then didn't write much till now.

I post about #Coding, #Flutter, #Writing, #Movies and #TV. I'll also talk about #Technology, #Gadgets, #MachineLearning, #DeepLearning and a few other things as the fancy strikes ...

Lived in: 🇱🇰🇸🇦🇺🇸🇳🇿🇸🇬🇲🇾🇦🇪🇫🇷🇪🇸🇵🇹🇶🇦🇨🇦

If anyone is looking for a remote from Canada iOS developer with 15+ years of experience, I am available.

@mattiem @cdf1982 Totally agree that all games need a very easy mode 🙂 We (my wife and I) play because we enjoy the story in a game and want to find out more. But when combat (even in easy mode) makes it impossible to proceed beyond a certain point, we usually give up on the game.

I too don’t understand why it’s so difficult for most game developers to cater to those of us who just don’t enjoy playing the same level over and over just to get through it …

@ruralgloom I've decided that it's not worth worrying about 🙂I don't know if my fiction is there on piracy sites or not, but I do know that my programming books are.

I just decided that it's not worth wondering what to do since then I'd be investing all my energy into that instead of doing the things I enjoy.

@crcollins I'm mostly a "cards where they land" kind of writer 🙂 Similar to you, when doing the first draft, for me it's all about just getting the story down. Then in the second (or third draft) is when I start thinking about how I might be able to add some more colour/description. Of cousre, that means that some of the tell-no-show stuff from the original just gets by in the later drafts ...

@finestructure Yep! I used to have an extension called Lazarus (I think) installed on Firefox just becuase I'd type a lot of text in a web form and then lose it all. It would remember all your form entries ...

Not sure if that's still around and if it is available on the browser you use though ...

Alright so, a bit of a reach, retoots appreciated. I would love to get in touch with someone in academia who is focused on forest history and research, particularly Scandinavian forests that are more than 150 years old. I want to ask a lot of questions. Help!

I have to confess that I'm still confused by some of the Kindle stuff … I published an EPUB, but didn’t do the paperback version since I didn’t have the correct layouts and stuff.

But Amazon still put up books at exorbitant prices ($30 in the US and a whopping CAD 145 in Canada) for the paperback version. Where did those come from?

I finally went ahead and submitted actual paperback versions to Amazon yesterday and now the Canadian paperback version is down to something like CAD 20, but the US version still shows $30.

Of course, this could be caching or refreshing delays since the paperback version just got approved, but I have to confess that I’m still mystified by some of this stuff since I don’t know if the issue is at my end or theirs …

But if you wanted a paperback copy of my book, now you can get it from Amazon. Not that I’m sure anybody would want to 😛

You’re probably better off waiting for a couple of weeks for the Smashwords sale. But given how things have gone with promotions so far, I’m a bit leery of even that 😀

@stroughtonsmith I feel the same as you as an Apple Developer. I had over 20+ apps on the store at one point in time, but now I can't even be bothered to update the ones I have. After this year's WWDC, I am firmly in the camp of writing future apps in something like Flutter so that I can move on to a different platform if need be ...

Ok, where to begin? 😛

Been head down writing for a couple of weeks now, but of course, once I start writing, that’s when I also want to code 😀 So I finish one story arc in my WIP and switch to coding on yet another Fedi client because I was getting tired of my current Swift-based Fedi client starting to slow down after a month or two …

Then, on top of that, I decided to try and actually do some promotion of my first novel. I’ve never been very good at self-promotion — it just feels a little too pushy to me.

I’m trying to be better but still can’t get rid of the nagging feeling that I’m pushing too much.

And then I went and did something today which might be a big boo-boo 😀

I have had this Facebook page for Jim Butcher that I created a very long time ago — probably 10 years or more? I started it when I first started reading Butcher and really liked it but there was no Jim Butcher presence on FB. So I created a page and I made it clear that JB was not involved.

Years passed. FB changed how pages worked and the page moved to the new system. I don’t think I really paid attention since I’d moved on to new stuff …

When I was promoting my book on FB the last few days, I thought, “Hey why not share to the Jim Butcher page too? Somebody there might like my book …” So I did.

But what I didn’t realize was that when I shared to the JB page, it didn’t share as me but as Jim Butcher. Ooops ….

I only realized today when I switched over to that page to see if there were any reaction to my posts. People were starting to freak out wondering why JB would post about somebody else’s book and if the site had been taken over and so on …

I don’t really like to deceive people and this felt bad to me. I did as much as I could to allay fears and to update the page again to indicate that JB wasn’t involved and to correct my mistake.

But I’m really not sure if that was enough. But I can’t think of what else I could do. If I took down any of the original posts, then that might be seen as an attempt to cover up or something. Who really knows? I certainly don’t 🙂

@davemark Unless I’m confusing things, I believe on Mac you need 16GB of RAM to run at least some of the new “AI” functionality … So I believe the RAM capacity will be a factor even if you have M1 Macs …

The new ContainerValues is also really appreciated, a huge missing piece when developing custom SwiftUI components. Really feels like Apple is bridging the gap between API surface and the "black box magic" of SwiftUI this year!

@invalidname UK panel shows in general are the best — once you get hooked, there’s no going back 😛 If you want quiz shows, then you might want to give “Richard Osman’s House of Games” a try too. I believe there are lots of episodes on YouTube …

But if you are looking for non-quiz shows, give “TaskMaster” or “Would I Lie to You” a try. Hilarious and we generally re-watch the seasons over and over when we run out of stuff to watch 🙂

@AndreasThinks I used to post about new machine learning papers daily but as you mention, there isn’t a lot of conversation over here these days.

Plus, the growing tar and feather everything remotely connected to “AI” (and I use the term loosely since I don’t like using that term since what we have now isn’t AI) sentiment doesn’t really lead to open conversation …

So I’ve just stopped talking about the stuff I’m working on. But there are at least some people on here who still talk about ML related stuff on and off ….

Depending on what you are interested in, whether it’s practical implementations, new advances, a particular field etc. I might be able to point you to some …

Seeing a bunch of posts about how "native" developers are better, during WWDC. All languages are tools, each has its pros/cons.

No need to be a tool about how great your language is (or how bad other developers are) though 😛
