Do you consciously apply show rather than tell in your writing, or do the cards land where they may?

I guess I'm a "cards land wherever they tumble all over the floor" kind of gal. 😆 At least in the first draft. I write what sounds best. There are some parts I absolutely want to show & some that can be summarized. If my editor says something needs to be shown, that's when I'll purposely go in and change things.

@crcollins I'm mostly a "cards where they land" kind of writer 🙂 Similar to you, when doing the first draft, for me it's all about just getting the story down. Then in the second (or third draft) is when I start thinking about how I might be able to add some more colour/description. Of cousre, that means that some of the tell-no-show stuff from the original just gets by in the later drafts ...

Yeah, at first, you just want to get the story out of your brain 😀 I do the same thing with scenery & other details. My first drafts are like scaffolding that I use to build on later.
