Apple technorati:

Given that Apple Intelligence will require an iPhone 15 Pro or later, do we know the requirements for iPad and Mac?

Is the M1 chip (and its 8GB of DRAM) the floor here? Has Apple laid this out?

@davemark The M1 indeed seems to be the floor level for the Mac and iPad.

Which makes me wonder why I can use AI with a M1 iPad and not with my iPhone 14 Pro Max. Why?

@ljpuk Top of my head, I believe the A16 has 6 GB of DRAM

@davemark Unless I’m confusing things, I believe on Mac you need 16GB of RAM to run at least some of the new “AI” functionality … So I believe the RAM capacity will be a factor even if you have M1 Macs …

@davemark This isn't a RAM issue. It's the size of the neural engine. Look at it this way, A17 Pro is the first iPhone chip with a neural engine as powerful if not more than an M1 chip.

M1 is the cutoff because of its neural engine.

@davemark @theevildonut I was going to guess it’s tied to thermals and some sort of new NPU improvements with M4. Less concern on the Mac side since they usually/primarily will be used while connected to a power source and likely also people use Siri/these features less on Mac?
