I'm a bit of an eclectic mess πŸ™‚ I've been a programmer, journalist, editor, TV producer, and a few other things.

I'm currently working on my second novel which is complete, but is in the edit stage. I wrote my first novel over 20 years ago but then didn't write much till now.

I post about #Coding, #Flutter, #Writing, #Movies and #TV. I'll also talk about #Technology, #Gadgets, #MachineLearning, #DeepLearning and a few other things as the fancy strikes ...

@davemark They did mention this during WWDC, if I'm not mistaken. Unless you really don't want the code completion functionality, this probably makes the minimum RAM for a dev machine 16GB.

And I wouldn't be surprised if the 16GB RAM requirement becomes necessary for other features too and not just code completion ...

@BobWilliams I'm glad πŸ™‚

Running on little sleep is no fun. I've had issues with sleep for the last 2 - 3 years but apparently it was mostly because I had been sleeping without a pillow most of my life πŸ˜›

I guess you can't do it as you get older? Switching to a pillow has helped me somewhat manage it for the last few months. So here's hoping ...

@davemark Yep πŸ™‚You were the main character. The monsters took you to an alternate reality where they want you to teach them how to code for iOS but in their reality, the iPhone is as big as a cart because their technology isn't good enough to miniaturize everything ... Or something along those lines πŸ˜›

Good times!

@davemark Those books led to this book πŸ™‚ Don’t know if you remember this one and how you were kidnapped by monsters to teach them iOS πŸ˜›

@BobWilliams Sorry to hear about the sleep issues. I sympathize. Hope sleep comes your way!

@BobWilliams I totally get that. Any time I wake up at 2:30am in the morning and can't get back to sleep, I feel like this for most of the morning.

In my case though, things do seem to improve by afternoon. I have no idea why since I would have thought that as the day progresses, I'd get more annoyed due to lack of sleep πŸ™‚

@stroughtonsmith Apple is not a company that anyone can trust ... just like a lot of the other corporations out there. They are all in it for one thing β€” profit.

Apple just manipulates the media much better and the media lets itself be manipulated. And people buy into this and go on about how great Apple is.

@johnhowesauthor Sometimes it doesn't even have to be arcane but just unfamiliar to other readers and it can create confusion β€” or a superirority complex πŸ™‚

I used the words "tarred macadam" in one of my novels to describe the road since it is (or used to be) a common term from where I was. But a US reader accused me of "inventing" words after reading. it.

Of course, it's possible that he took my name to mean that I wasn't familiar with English, but that's another story ... πŸ˜›

@mattiem @cdf1982 Totally agree that all games need a very easy mode πŸ™‚ We (my wife and I) play because we enjoy the story in a game and want to find out more. But when combat (even in easy mode) makes it impossible to proceed beyond a certain point, we usually give up on the game.

I too don’t understand why it’s so difficult for most game developers to cater to those of us who just don’t enjoy playing the same level over and over just to get through it …

@ruralgloom I've decided that it's not worth worrying about πŸ™‚I don't know if my fiction is there on piracy sites or not, but I do know that my programming books are.

I just decided that it's not worth wondering what to do since then I'd be investing all my energy into that instead of doing the things I enjoy.

@crcollins I'm mostly a "cards where they land" kind of writer πŸ™‚ Similar to you, when doing the first draft, for me it's all about just getting the story down. Then in the second (or third draft) is when I start thinking about how I might be able to add some more colour/description. Of cousre, that means that some of the tell-no-show stuff from the original just gets by in the later drafts ...

@finestructure Yep! I used to have an extension called Lazarus (I think) installed on Firefox just becuase I'd type a lot of text in a web form and then lose it all. It would remember all your form entries ...

Not sure if that's still around and if it is available on the browser you use though ...

Alright so, a bit of a reach, retoots appreciated. I would love to get in touch with someone in academia who is focused on forest history and research, particularly Scandinavian forests that are more than 150 years old. I want to ask a lot of questions. Help!

I have to confess that I'm still confused by some of the Kindle stuff … I published an EPUB, but didn’t do the paperback version since I didn’t have the correct layouts and stuff.

But Amazon still put up books at exorbitant prices ($30 in the US and a whopping CAD 145 in Canada) for the paperback version. Where did those come from?

I finally went ahead and submitted actual paperback versions to Amazon yesterday and now the Canadian paperback version is down to something like CAD 20, but the US version still shows $30.

Of course, this could be caching or refreshing delays since the paperback version just got approved, but I have to confess that I’m still mystified by some of this stuff since I don’t know if the issue is at my end or theirs …

But if you wanted a paperback copy of my book, now you can get it from Amazon. Not that I’m sure anybody would want to πŸ˜›

You’re probably better off waiting for a couple of weeks for the Smashwords sale. But given how things have gone with promotions so far, I’m a bit leery of even that πŸ˜€

@stroughtonsmith I feel the same as you as an Apple Developer. I had over 20+ apps on the store at one point in time, but now I can't even be bothered to update the ones I have. After this year's WWDC, I am firmly in the camp of writing future apps in something like Flutter so that I can move on to a different platform if need be ...
