I'm a bit of an eclectic mess ๐Ÿ™‚ I've been a programmer, journalist, editor, TV producer, and a few other things.

I'm currently working on my second novel which is complete, but is in the edit stage. I wrote my first novel over 20 years ago but then didn't write much till now.

I post about #Coding, #Flutter, #Writing, #Movies and #TV. I'll also talk about #Technology, #Gadgets, #MachineLearning, #DeepLearning and a few other things as the fancy strikes ...

I wrote my first novel over 20 years ago. Then I got busy with work and life and didn't write for the longest time. Finally, my second novel is out today. It's a science fiction novel called "Sir Lanka Files" set in a future Sri Lanka thousands of years from now.

The book is on Amazon here:
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D9YZT5QZ

Please take a look and if you like what you see, please share with your friends who might like it too and help an indie author out ๐Ÿ™‚

Refreshed my writing portfolio with some samples. Happy to chat if any indie folks would like a bit of freelance narrative/writing.

I'm great at lore, world building, juicy flavour text and unique characters.

People always complains about how artists NEED to be on places like youtube, instagram or twitter because of reach and discoverability but here I am, trying to find where the fashion doll customizers are hiding these days and finding almost nothing?? Have the hobby shrunk so much since I was more or less active in the early 10s or what's happening here?

I just turned in my for my MSc in with at !

The title of my thesis is โ€œExploring the impact of data imbalance on ฮต-Differential Privacyโ€ and I do just that using the open-source Python library developed by IBM, diffprivlib. Iโ€™d love to share the results of my experiments in a white paper of some kind. Does anyone Iโ€™m connected to have experience in converting a masters thesis into a white paper for a journal or conference?

New Server; New #Introduction

I'm Daniel, I've been involved with activism for most of my life, and I have a life-long interest in the intersection of technology and class/privilege.

I live near the sea -- but not too near -- in Midleton, a small town in Ireland.

Parent to four kids, 75% of whom are now adults, and half of whom are attending University (which is *astonishing* as I'm still only 25...)

I love #reading, and try to post about books I love, which are usually Science Fiction and Fantasy. #amreading

I autodelete all my posts after 60 days.

I've been on fedi since 2011, have used #mastodon since April 2017.

Today, I submitted my 100th resume. Iโ€™m *excellent* at building advanced web applications and experiences. Over the years, Iโ€™ve developed an instinct for whether an interaction will โ€œworkโ€ without having to actually write any code. Iโ€™m hungry to learn new things and tackle the next challenge.

Portfolio in bio. Thanks to everyone whoโ€™s supported me with a boost or a kind word so far!

Hello, new Mastadon server! I've migrated for the second time. It's been a while since I posted - off doing other projects, such as writing and publishing another scifi novel and teaching programming (circuits in Rec Room), but hopefully I will be around more. I used to do some AI-generated images for writing prompts. I've also been researching city planning and architecture for another book. I really like the clean, Japanese esthetic. I'm also a programmer, emphasizing databases, using whatever language best fits the task. I'm also currently teaching myself Rhino (3D software). My website has a lot of random and interesting things (linked in profile).

@codemonkeymike Which Linux distro do you use?

My biggest issue is my dependence on a few apps. I've been slowly switching over my personal apps to Flutter so that they can run on any platform, but I haven't tested them on Linux and don't really know how well Flutter apps work generally in Linux. But once I have all my personal apps converted over, I will (hopefully) be free ๐Ÿ™‚

The first OS I used was DOS (well, if you don't count the Sinclair ZX80) and then I moved on to Windows. Then in 2009 I switched to macOS.

I found the hardware and software as trouble-free as could be and so I've stuck with macOS till now. But now, given Apple's current direction, I have been thinking since WWDC that it is time to switch again. Question is, to what?

I see people online who talk about how they'll never switch away from Apple for whatever reason. Good for them. I have no such compunctions. I will switch if the OS (or the company) no longer aligns with what I want.

I have been running both Linux and Windows on secondary machines for a while because I knew this day was coming. From a purely software perspective, given that it has the most software and supports most things I currently run, Windows seems to be the choice. But I'm not absolutely certain.

But it looks very much as if my next computer will not be a Mac.

Being an user in 2024 is basically:

- I LOVE their hardware.
- Iโ€™m AFRAID of what theyโ€™ll do to their software and operating systems.
- Iโ€™m DISGUSTED by everything else they do to developers and users like myself.

Trip Tunes v1.2 is now live on the App Store! It has greatly improved variety and uniqueness in playlists due to some updates to the prompt and some client-side magic.

If you give it a try, let me know how the playlists are!

@stroughtonsmith Every time I hear about Phil Schiller, or have an interaction which is somehow connected to him โ€” like an App Store rejection โ€” I always think that he's Apple's Ballmer. Seems to have the same kind of attitudes, and the same overall net effect for his company.

@orionkidder It lets you figure out overused words at the moment, possibly ๐Ÿ™‚It shows you lists of unique words in your text as well as repeated words and their count.

It also does some other text analysis about words which appear together but that's not quite ready yet.

The idea is that I'll add additional functionality which allows you to add a list of words or phrases that you want to watch out for and the app will highlight the occurencce of these in the document too. But that parts not done yet.

I've been working on my Scrivener text analyzer over the weekend and while I initially thought that it might take about 3 - 4 days at least to see progress, I've been able to get to a fairly functional level in just two days ๐Ÿ™‚

At this point, I have a working app which can load a Scrivener document, extract just the manuscript text, parse it and provide information and identify components of text โ€” like unique words, or repeated words and the word count.

If you select one of the words from the list, the viewer highlights every occurence of the word in the document. So I'm very pleased with where things are now ๐Ÿ™‚

All that remains is to do the following:
1. Add the ability to detect specific types of words like nouns, verbs, adjectives etc.
2. Add the ability to detect/hightlight specific words or phrases added by the user.

At that point, I believe it does everything that I want it to do. This should work on any platform but I have only tested under macOS. If anybody is interested in testing it out, let me know and I'll see about setting up a download.

I watched three Indian movies this weekend in a mix of languages: one Tamil and two Malayalam. I liked all of them to one degree or another, but they all had one frustrating feature โ€” they all ended with a hook for a sequel.

Two were blatant in the story wasn't really even complete. One was a little bit more unobtrusive. But it's really annoying that this happens more and more often.

One of the things I hated about TV shows was that the season would end in a cliffhanger and you don't know if the story would continue or not. Now it feels as if more and more movies are doing that too. I want a complete story, darn it! ๐Ÿ˜›
