I'm a bit of an eclectic mess ๐Ÿ™‚ I've been a programmer, journalist, editor, TV producer, and a few other things.

I'm currently working on my second novel which is complete, but is in the edit stage. I wrote my first novel over 20 years ago but then didn't write much till now.

I post about #Coding, #Flutter, #Writing, #Movies and #TV. I'll also talk about #Technology, #Gadgets, #MachineLearning, #DeepLearning and a few other things as the fancy strikes ...

Fantasy, Lore, & More: The Secrets Weย Save

Hi, I'm indie fantasy author, Melinda Kucsera, and in this episode, Kel E Fox is joining me to talk about her book, The Secrets We Save. What's it about? In a world where humans live hundreds of years and can perceive deception as easily as breathing, it takes a rare magic called Whispering to tell a lie. Ursa has denied this magic to become a pilot, while Del embraced Whispering and left his family to work as a spy.

Fahim Farook

In an island city where the Cat Men of the Thieves Guild rule supreme, DaVic, a private eye with more quips than credits, takes on a job for the Thieves Guild from a mysterious femme fatale. This job lands him on the on the run through the dark streets of Sir Lanka, trying to stay one step ahead of those who pursue him.

In trying to unravel the mystery, he ends up finding a sidekick in the form of a Thieves Guild Tea Leaf, KarJa. With her help, the duo start cracking the case and when Sir Lanka is brought to the brink of war by way of a clash of ideals between the Guild and a nascent revolution, would DaVic and Karja be able to stop a bloodbath? Or will they be too busy helping tree-like aliens who are wary of human contact, or dealing with a bunch of alien scientists who are conducting experiments in the very heart of Sir Lanka?

Find out in "Sir Lanka Files". Coming August 15th, but now available for pre-order on Amazon.

@jefframes OK, there's an inconclusve discussion about this subject in this Reddit thread ๐Ÿ™‚

@jefframes Huh, I knew that HAL in "2001" was basically one-letter ahead of IBM, but had not even heard of HAL Laboratories till today ๐Ÿ™‚

Do you happen to know if they used the name before "2001" was written (or the movie released) or after? I guess I can look it up (and probably will) but just thought you might know ...

TL;DR: HELP ME REUNITE WITH MY PENCIL BOX๐Ÿ˜ญ

I know this is a long shot but if you spot a pencil box that approximately looks like this stuffed with fountain pens, crochet hooks and a penguin key chain, please let me know?

Highly likely in Dublin City Centre by the River Liffey

It is not that valuable in money, but it does have my fountain pens and I am so sad. ๐Ÿ˜ญ ๐Ÿ˜ญ ๐Ÿ˜ญ

Mine is more maroon than rainbow but it looks like this.

BRB going to cry my eyes out

@BobWilliams Hopefully, it will get approved soon โ€” sending good vibes your way ๐Ÿ™‚My general experience has been that Google Review is generally faster than Apple Review, though there've been outliers on both sides ...

My wife told me to take the spider out instead of killing him.

Went out. Had a few drinks. Nice guy. He's a web designer.

I Herald Petrel by @strangeseawolf, and Iโ€™m more or less halfway through. Itโ€™s a fun, fast-paced sci-fi story, an easy read even though it deals with some difficult subjects like loss of a loved one, PTSD and death. Check out Strange Seawolf if you donโ€™t know them โ€” theyโ€™ve been sharing some fun things about the book โ˜บ๏ธ

@SusanneDoering Thank you ๐Ÿ™‚My wife will be very pleased when I tell her. I don't think she totally believes me when I tell her that it's a great cover.

@crcollins That sounds like the start to a mystery novel plot, but then again, I mistrust my relaties probably way more than you do ๐Ÿ˜€

@mythopoetica @crcollins All I can add to the conversation is that Amazon hasn't sent me any money at all ๐Ÿ™‚

But that's OK. I supposedly have a sale this month. So maybe next month?

I know it's disheartening sometimes. Plus, I wrote my first novel 20 years ago and it sold like 3 copies at that time and then I gave up. But now I feel as if success will come eventually if you keep at it? Or so I hope ...

@BobWilliams Yep, things have changed a lot ๐Ÿ™‚ But at least you don't have to pay $99 every year as a tax. I find the Play Store interface much harder to grok though. Hafl the time, I'm not sure which section I need to be in to fix an issue ...

Publication day again!

A bittersweet moment for me, as this is not only the final volume in my second trilogy but also the last story set in a world, and featuring characters, I've been working with for almost 12 years.

Part of me is glad it's done, and looking forward to new projects. And part is sad to say goodbye to a cast of characters I've come to know so well.

My Gavin Rownt medieval mystery, "The Players' Boy" is number 7 in Amazon's Medieval Historical Fiction category for Kindle books, number 14 for books overall. It only exists as an ebook.

New fediverse account. Time for the obligatory .

Former denizen displaced to Idaho as of 04/24. I'll be back someday, probably sooner than later.

Things I blab about most:

* alchemist
* maker
* Practitioner of mediocre
* Avid reader of , , and technical works of all kinds
* Non-motorist by choice

Don't be surprised if, months from now, my feed consists of nothing old-man-yells-at-clouds type rants about missing unit tests and PMs trying to bypass design work.

@stroughtonsmith The number of people who want to tell you off on the Internet, even if they don't understand the subject, is rather amazing ๐Ÿ™‚

When I first got into machine learning a few years ago, I created an image classifer for Terry Pratchettt cover art โ€” to classify which artist had created a particular piece of art.

I was very proud of it and immediately went to a sub-reddit devoted to Discworld because I'd lurked there for a long time and I thought they were pretty cool people and wanted to share something Discworld related.

You should have seen the reactions โ€” at least the initial ones ๐Ÿ™‚Somebody (who obviously didn't understand what an image classifier was) told me that I should leave art to the artists and move on.

I was totally surprised by the tone and by the fact that they were supposed to have been a PTerry fan. PTerry loved tech and would probably have embraced machine learning is what I think.

But anyway, cooler heads prevailed after I stood my ground but it was weird. And that was in the early days. Nowadays, I just don't talk about machine learning or deep learning just because most people who want to tell you off don't even understand what they are talking about ๐Ÿ˜›
