I'm a bit of an eclectic mess πŸ™‚ I've been a programmer, journalist, editor, TV producer, and a few other things.

I'm currently working on my second novel which is complete, but is in the edit stage. I wrote my first novel over 20 years ago but then didn't write much till now.

I post about #Coding, #Flutter, #Writing, #Movies and #TV. I'll also talk about #Technology, #Gadgets, #MachineLearning, #DeepLearning and a few other things as the fancy strikes ...

Hi friends, I was laid off from Google last week and I'm looking for new opportunities. I'd like to find a role where I'm directly working with people to address their infrastructure needs.

A few of the types of problems I'd love to work on:

- building internal platforms
- on-prem/hybrid cloud
- cost optimization
- ops/infra tooling

But I'm also open to many other areas of focus. If you're looking for a senior engineer with an ops/infra focus, please get in touch.

@clive The Rosicrucians used to use this in their promotional pamphlets way back in the day. I never knew the origin of the system and at that time (when I was 12 - 15) thought that they’d invented the system πŸ˜› Good to know the origins at last …

Most folks know about da VInci's Vitruvian Man. But not as many know about Buckminster Fuller's Cheetodesic Dome.

@jaydubs Yeah, they are pretty prolific with the code changes πŸ™‚ I believe there are a lot of people helping out on that project. They do keep adding stuff fast. Which is one reason that I went with that repo for what I wanted β€” the fact that they add new features without me having to do the work πŸ˜›

@jaydubs Ah, thank you 😊 Then they must have been added recently because I don't see them in my version of the code, which is about a week old. So at least I wasn't maligning them πŸ˜›

@Djerbien @jaydubs @icecubesapp I shy away from making definitive statements since β€œbest” is all subjective … what works for you might not work for me πŸ™‚ Personally, I find #Tusker the best app for *me* since it has lots of subtle features which speak of care by the developer β€” that they use the app themselves and developed the app primarily for themselves.

The only thing I miss from #IceCubesApp that #Tusker doesn’t have is post editing but it’s easy enough to add. I’ve just not bothered to do so yet since I don’t edit stuff that much.

@jaydubs I just tried out the build I have of #IceCubesApp because I was curious β€” was my memory that bad? πŸ˜› Couldn’t find the hashtags or lists on the main UI. And I couldn’t see any references to hashtags or lists in the commit notes for the source code for the last week …

So it might be that it was there always but I never found it? I have no idea. Where do you find the hashtags and lists feature in #IceCubesApp? In #Tusker they are on the main sidebar where you can add different hashtags to follow or create lists of people to follow …

@jaydubs I've used #IceCubeApp on and off for several weeks but I had to modify the code to make it work for Akkoma πŸ™‚ I submitted a PR for the change but they didn't really want to do it my way and it looks as if Akkoma compatibility isn't a priority for them.

I kind of lost interest at that point since I found Tusker at the same time. So I don't know if I misrepresented things to you (about hashtags and lists) due to bad memory, or if that was added very recently ... But if the latter, then probably within the last week since I was using IceCubes last week (I think ..)

@jaydubs #IceCubesApp is indeed great. But if you like the instance feature, you might also want to give #Tusker a look πŸ™‚ (Not Tusky, BTW) It has the instance feature where you can add multiple instance timelines, but also has list and hashtag support, which I missed in IceCubesApp.

Ivory looks good and and in time might become great, but at the moment, it has the least amount of new/interesting features, IMO. Plus, it only works with Mastodon servers only and leaves out other Mastodon-compatiblie servers like Akkoma/Pleroma. Incidentally, IceCubesApp has the same issue. But Tusker works with other Fedi-servers too.

I keep hearing that is not likely to replace . To that I say: so what?
I've been contributing to the desktop for the last 15 years not because it's likely to replace , but because providing people with free desktop is the right thing to do.
I use and support Mastodon not because it's likely to replace Twitter, but because it's a social network done right.

I'm a former historian, researcher / author who switched careers about a year ago to become a software engineer (currently an ML engineer @ ZenML working on ).

I'm retraining myself to think and work in technical domains. Software is my day job, but around the edges I'm studying (mainly via ), mathematics (via Open University's degree) and also the 'Basic Program' at Chicago University.

Day 27

Hellebores in my garden
I took this photo last March while having a wander in my back garden. At the time I had Covid and was looking for something to cheer myself up. The Hellebore flowers provided that cheer. Although I did manage to slice my finger open while cutting the flowers πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ
