I'm a bit of an eclectic mess 🙂 I've been a programmer, journalist, editor, TV producer, and a few other things.

I'm currently working on my second novel which is complete, but is in the edit stage. I wrote my first novel over 20 years ago but then didn't write much till now.

I post about #Coding, #Flutter, #Writing, #Movies and #TV. I'll also talk about #Technology, #Gadgets, #MachineLearning, #DeepLearning and a few other things as the fancy strikes ...

@Herstory We did try story books in the early days (3 - 4 years ago) but at that point we were trying to run before we could walk 😛

Now would certainly be a good time to go back to them, but personally, I'm too impatient to do that if I'm busy with other stuff. I hate having to stop to look up words instead of gaining an idea of what I'm reading based on context. My wife is more patient 🙂

So we probably will try the comics for a while and then go on from there. Thank you for the suggestions!

"Improving Deep Regression with Ordinal Entropy. (arXiv:2301.08915v1 [cs.CV])" — An investigation of the fact that in computer vision, formulating regression problems as a classification task often yields better performance, and shows that classification, with the cross-entropy loss, outperforms regression with a mean squared error loss in its ability to learn high-entropy feature representations.

A total of 105 papers in the cs.CV category on arXiv.org today — 76 new, 29 updated.

Double the number as yesterday and so double the fun? 😛

I talked yesterday about trying to decide whether we should give up on our 1000+ day streak on DuoLingo because stories were no longer fun (and DuoLingo seemed to be actually discouraging you from doing stories only ....)

We talked it over and decided that we weren't going to stick with it just for the sake of maintaining a streak 😛 So yesterday we switched over to reading comics in French and Spanish (on alternate days). It feels a lot more fun and I'm looking forward to today's reading ...

@Herstory Personally, I don't think it's ever too late to learn new stuff 🙂 My wife started learning to draw a few months back and personally, I think she's doing great! (She sometimes begs to differ ...) We are both probably a bit older than you and so my point was that you can start learning something new at any point in your life and if anybody tells you otherwise, just ignore 'em 😛

@Herstory Sorry, I replied to you about this but apparently my app kind of messed up the reply (and the original post) by replacing it with multiple items I created today 😛

Basically, what I originally said was, I do realize that we can access the stories separately (we have the Stories page bookmarked so that we can get to them instead of going through the lesson path) but the issue is that the stories you see there are a subset of what we used to get.

In fact, it appears as if you only get some stories based on how much of the lesson you've completed. For the same language, say Spanish, I get a different number of stories than my wife since we've completed different amounts of the Spanish lesson. So that's a bit annoying.

Plus, there haven't been any new stories in a while and we've been going through the same stories several times. So we gave up yesterday and switched to reading comics in French and Spanish since that's more fun 🙂

@shadowfacts Congratulations! This looks great 🙂

Thank you also for making the source code available! I generally prefer apps with source code available because then, if I want a particular feature and the developer is busy (or if there is a bug) I can do it myself.

I'm currently using a fork of Mastonaut so that I can add the features I wanted but that leaves my wife out of getting the features she wants since she's on iOS. So this would be a great way for me to ensure that we both have what we want 😛

(Just in case you get two replies from me, or get linked to a post which appears to have nothing to do with you, it's because my Mastonaut fork had a bug where I unknowingly edited an older post multiple times instead of creating new posts/replies. So if this did happen to you, sorry about that!)

At this point, “The Last of Us” is the TV show I anticipate the most. Maybe that’s not saying much, but still … 😛

Without spoiling anything, I love how they’ve portrayed zombies and want to learn more about the world with each episode.

We are huge fans of Naughty Dog games given that we played through all of the “Uncharted” games and “The Lost Legacy” too as fast as we could … and loved the story of “Uncharted 4” to bits.

But I didn’t know if we’d like “The Last of Us” since we kind of shy away from killing games and based on the premise, that’s what it sounded like … Now, after starting the TV show, I’m wondering if we should go back and play the game too … Also, there’s apparently a remake and so maybe it really is time to try it?

Ugh, looks as if there’s a bug in my Mastonaut fork and instead of replying to multiple posts, I’ve been editing one post of mine … I hate bugs like that .. Now I don’t even know where to begin unraveling the mess I’ve created for myself 😕

I don’t have much of a network on here, but hi, hello, I’m an experienced front-end web developer and web accessibility specialist located in the US and I am looking for remote work!

I’ve extensively used React, am familiar with Vue and a handful of other front-end frameworks, and can learn just about any front-end stack. My happy place is building things that make the web easier for users.

Underappreciated skill of the day:

Keeping your mouth shut when it's not going to help.

This skill is not easy to learn, and I've personally found it practically impossible to master.

I'm looking for a remote job. I'm based in São Paulo/Brazil, and had titles such as ("software design dynamics facilitator" as I liked to describe it) at a Brazilian Fintech, for the developer experience team at an EdTech startup, and more recently at a cyber security company. I've been working since the 2000s with , and I'm interested in , and systems.

When I was about ten, I noticed an infrared sensor in our VCR and became convinced that it was a hidden camera that my parents were using to spy on me.

I wasn’t a bad kid so I wasn’t worried, but I convinced myself that if I sang and danced for the camera, my parents would FINALLY see my talent and help me get on Star Search.

For the next month, I did super weird performances in front of that VCR until I finally acknowledged that they hadn’t provided any feedback on my skillz, at which point I determined that the only logical conclusion was that the camera wasn’t working, so I…

DISMANTLED THE VCR to examine the camera.

Once everything was opened up and pulled apart, I realized I had no idea what I was looking at so I just screwed everything back together with a bunch of loose, rattling parts inside.

About a week later, I remember watching my dad trying to play a VHS tape to no avail and silently thinking “this is YOUR fault for not seeing my full POTENTIAL, daaaaad!”
