Google employees are known as āGooglersā. New employees are āNooglersā and dogs that come to work with their owners are āDooglers.
In the 1800s, some people tried to disguise toilets as stacks of books (Image: FrDr; CC BY-SA).
Andy Weir's The Martian astronaut (supposedly a botanist), played by Matt Damon, almost starved due to a misunderstanding of #potato #propagation. He waited for his #garden's first crop to make tubers before starting the next generation when, instead, he could have taken stem cuttings, or even leaf cuttings, and made hundreds of new plants.
Of course that would have killed the dramatic tension.
Learn plant propagation. It can save lives, AND it's not f*cking rocket science. /end rant

The remarkable thing is that we created it for $30 using one server for 3 hours on a small dataset using a 2 year old open source LLM model. The secret in magical human-like interactivity probably lies in a small dataset, not huge models, not training for 100,000 GPU hours." #StochasticParrots #LLM #MachineLearning
I got a suggestion to use hashtags to help kickstart my network here. So here's a hashtag-dense list of my interests:
I'm a data-focused #machinelearning engineer at #Apple, working with #PyTorch, #Spark, and #Python which I write with a #Haskell accent. I used to work in #LearningTheory.
I enjoy long distance #running and #trailrunning and am training for my first #ultramarathon.
In my spare time I make electronic #ModularSynth/#Eurorack music and am learning #JazzPiano and the #GameOfGo.
Sometimes it seems lonely over here on Mastodon but Iām plugging away, looking for good accounts to follow to keep up with what is going on.
SUGGESTIONS ON ACCOUNTS TO FOLLOW WILL BE WELCOMED. To that end Reblogging this post would help.
Thank you to the handful of accounts that follow me.šš½
For #throwbackthursday, one of my best shots from before I joined Mastodon ā a male blackbird on an autumn morning.
The sky reflecting off the wet asphalt makes it look like a studio shot, and the unseasonably-green plant looks sort of fake too ā so much so that I'm inclined to dislike this shot because it just looks staged? Knowing that it isn't, though, I'm really happy with it.

#introduction I am an assistant professor at the University of Amsterdam in the Amsterdam Machine Learning Lab (https://amlab.science.uva.nl/).
My research interests span approximate inference, computational statistics, causality, and their application to the sciences.
Currently working on diffusion models, generative flow networks, molecular dynamics, statistical hypothesis testing, variational methods, Monte Carlo methods... #ml #machinelearning #statistics #academic #research
Hello everyone! I am a #PhD student in #CS at #UCL. I am interested in #AI and #ML. I am also interested in #mathematics and #statistics!
I am into #graphs and Gaussian processes. I am also curious about geometric deep learning, probabilistic modelling and interpretable models.
I'm really looking forward to meeting new people here!

6 senior + 6 tenure-track faculty positions open at Johns Hopkins in #neuroscience: https://jobs.sciencecareers.org/job/641252/assistant-professor-of-neuroscience
Let's hope many insect neuroscientists working in #Drosophila, #mosquito and other critters apply.
Contact Chris Potter of #Anopheles mosquito research fame http://potterlab.johnshopkins.edu/ for an insider view of how it is to run an insect neuro lab there.
