I'm a bit of an eclectic mess ๐Ÿ™‚ I've been a programmer, journalist, editor, TV producer, and a few other things.

I'm currently working on my second novel which is complete, but is in the edit stage. I wrote my first novel over 20 years ago but then didn't write much till now.

I post about #Coding, #Flutter, #Writing, #Movies and #TV. I'll also talk about #Technology, #Gadgets, #MachineLearning, #DeepLearning and a few other things as the fancy strikes ...

Lived in: ๐Ÿ‡ฑ๐Ÿ‡ฐ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฟ๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ซ๐Ÿ‡ท๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡น๐Ÿ‡ถ๐Ÿ‡ฆ๐Ÿ‡จ๐Ÿ‡ฆ

Welp, I got hit by yesterday's layoffs at Gusto. This was a bummer, because the app my wee team was working on was really starting to come together, and the people there are all super nice.

However, I'm gonna be fine in the end. If you are hiring for Staff-level iOS, hit me up, especially for things involving GraphQL and SwiftUI. Remote only, but I'm available immediately.

#SwiftUI so easy to do the easy things, but so much harder to do even moderately non-standard stuff ๐Ÿ˜›

Grid views only allow single selection and single deletion, if you wanted to do multiple selection and multiple deletion, have to jump through a lot more hoops and suddenly, the whole โ€œyou just update the data and the UI will update by itselfโ€ thing no longer works โ€ฆ.

Ah, the joys of coding ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

Thought Iโ€™d put the new #ChatGPT plugin through its paces (Iโ€™m not linking to it, given the results, I think Iโ€™d be doing everybody a disservice linking to it โ€ฆ) and installed it. The very first Google query I had was for something coding related that I was stuck on โ€ฆ

The ChatGPT answer? Looks convincing but total BS ๐Ÿ˜›

PSA: Kids, do not rely on ChatGPT and always verify the info you receive from strangers (and ChatGPT or its ilk).

It feels a bit ghoulish to jump in on another server's closure but for those who need a new home now that mastodon.lol is shutting down, we still have plenty of room to grow on retro.pizza! We're a queer-run (but not queer-only) nerd culture instance with a small but healthy community and an admin who is very old and calloused by the Transformers Fandom Message Board Wars of the '00s.

If youโ€™re a user of a Debian-based Linux distro, and youโ€™re in the mood to help test a new Briefcase feature, Iโ€™d appreciate the help. Iโ€™ve put together a draft of a deb packaging backend, and I need feedback on whether it works, and/or meets end-user expectations for Debian/Ubuntu/etc users. https://github.com/beeware/briefcase/pull/1081

In honor of Throwback Thursday, here's my first ever pumpkin vine showing off one of its first blossoms. We weren't even serious (at first) about growing pumpkins that year! I dropped three seeds into an unprepared spot and kind of toed some dirt over them. They all sprouted and we got several pumpkins.

I saw a meme on tumblr earlier that said the best response to โ€œCan you explain this gap in your resumeโ€ is โ€œNo I signed an NDAโ€

This male White Tailed Deer was feeding on the vegetation in and posed just long enough for me to capture the portrait. Whitetail Deer antlers begin growing in early spring and are fully grown by late summer.

Hi now that I've migrated servers, it's time again!

I'm John Wu (he/him), a tenure-track Assistant Astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute! I study how galaxies grow and evolve by using deep learning and astronomical surveys--and occasionally multi-wavelength targeted observations too.

Happy to connect with others in the , , , , and communities!

2023-01-02-03/06 day 231/234 of doing art every day for a year (mostly - I took sick days off).

I am posting this piece out of order - I still have a backlog to catch up on. I'll get to that after this one.

No tutorial for this one. This is by request from Fahim. He had the idea of an egg-shaped rabbit sort of creature called a Hopper, not to be confused with Sri Lankan hoppers which are a food thing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appam

I had some fur brushes I wanted to try out, so I did. And then it morphed into an alien landscape since, well, I felt like it plus it was to go along with a short story Fahim wrote that takes place in The Basement of the Universe, a place we created together, in our 50 Galaxies universe. Yep, there's a huge backstory here.

I've posted a link to Fahim's story and a time lapse of the digital painting on my blog, which you can find here: http://lmashton.com/hopper/

And thatโ€™s another run of papers done โ€” 8 papers in the cs.CV category (and 2 outside) boosted out of the total of 71 new and updated papers released on arXiv.org today โ€ฆ

Thatโ€™s enough papers for me for today ๐Ÿ™‚

"What do we learn? Debunking the Myth of Unsupervised Outlier Detection. (arXiv:2206.03698v2 [cs.CV] UPDATED)" โ€” An investigation into what Auto-Encoders (AE) actually learn when they are posed to solve two different tasks and challenging the assumption that AEs are likely to be even better at reconstructing some types of Out-of-Distribution (OoD) samples.

"Improved Vector Quantized Diffusion Models. (arXiv:2205.16007v2 [cs.CV] UPDATED)" โ€” Two techniques to improve the sample quality of VQ-Diffusion. 1) Explore classifier-free guidance sampling for discrete denoising diffusion models to propose a more general and effective implementation of classifier-free guidance. 2) Use a high-quality inference strategy to alleviate the joint distribution issue in VQ-Diffusion.
