I'm a bit of an eclectic mess 🙂 I've been a programmer, journalist, editor, TV producer, and a few other things.

I'm currently working on my second novel which is complete, but is in the edit stage. I wrote my first novel over 20 years ago but then didn't write much till now.

I post about #Coding, #Flutter, #Writing, #Movies and #TV. I'll also talk about #Technology, #Gadgets, #MachineLearning, #DeepLearning and a few other things as the fancy strikes ...

It's a beautiful day here today. Here are some flowers from the yard. Wild violets (which grow everywhere here) and tulips.

Spoilers for: American Psycho, Big Fish, Bridge to Terabithia, and Life of Pi
Show content
@gaveen I haven’t watched either “American Psycho” or “Life of Pi”. I’ve watched the other two but have vague recollections of “Bridge to Terabithia” (my overall impression of the movie, the only thing that remains, is one of sadness — so not keen to go back to that one …) and don’t remember anything at all about “Big Fish”, except perhaps a vague feeling that it might be related to Elmore Leonard perhaps?

I’ll have to look that up …

But I’m trying to think of any movie where the narrator was intentionally unreliable and knew it and it wasn’t really a tale told by them (as was the case in “The Usual Suspects”) just to see how something like that might work in film … Not sure it would though 🙂

A Telugu movie I watched recently has had me thinking about unreliable narrators …

I can see how an unreliable narrator would work easily in fiction — if the book is in first-person perspective, then we rely on the narrator for all the information we receive and so, if the narrator misleads us (either intentionally or unintentionally) we’d be none the wiser.

But in movies, while the whole movie might follow a single character, we still get a slightly more omniscient viewpoint — while we do see what the character sees and who they interact with, given the medium, I’d expect the reactions of others to be not filtered through the character’s own viewpoint.

The most memorable unreliable narrator movies that I can think of are “The Sixth Sense”, “Fight Club”, “The Usual Suspects”, and “Memento”. And most of these work because the narrator themselves does not know that they are unreliable — what we see is what they “know” at a given moment. The only exception would be “The Usual Suspects”, but since the story there is narrated by someone, what we see is what they say. So that works.

The movie which prompted all these thoughts had somebody being portrayed as a kind and generous human being — they weren’t motivated by money, they help people, they don’t drink or gamble, and so on. But later on, we learn that the person is not at all what they seemed originally.

Now, I do realize that people sometimes hide their true-selves. They show one face to the world while hiding who they really are. But I would expect there to be some clues if you look close enough — especially in a movie since that involves the viewer more and makes them feel satisfied at having spotted the clues when the big reveal comes 😛

For example, if somebody pretends to love a person, of course, they’d call that person and declare their love all the time. But unless they both had a common circle of acquaintances, I wouldn’t expect the person pretending to be in love to go around telling everybody how much they are in love. That’s just too much work in my opinion 🙂

This particular movie had certain elements like that which made no sense later on when the big reveal came. They positioned one person as good, as somebody who wanted to help people. They positioned another person as bad, as somebody who would do anything for money. And then at the end they just go ahead and say, “Oh, the good guy is bad, and the bad guy actually would do anything to help someone in trouble.” It just didn’t work for me …

Yes, this might not make much sense to anybody reading since some context is missing — it probably is just too much of a stream-of-consciousness thing. But since I’m thinking so much about it at the moment, I figured I’d just jot it down … 😛

Of the various sub-genre of love stories that you find in Indian cinema, the they-fall-in-love-without-ever-having seen each other is one of the rarer ones. I like this genre because it’s harder to tell a story which is is believable for this scenario. And yet, some manage to do it …

“Butta Bomma” (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt23490324) appeared to be one such movie. The last such movie I recall seeing is from the ‘90s when mobile phones weren’t prevalent and the love story was built around letters.

This one makes full use of modern tech (or at least, somewhat modern tech since some of the plot revolves around not having a smartphone with a camera) where the love story developes between two people via phone.

The first half is a simple, sweet love story where two people find each other against odds. And then it all changes in the second half …

Revealing the rest of the plot would spoil things and so I’m not going to, but all I’ll say is that it takes a much darker turn at this point and diverges quite a bit from the sweet love story I’d expected. If you want a love story, this is not the movie for you, but if you want to be surprised it might work.

How the story goes is probably closer to life than the love story (and there is a somewhat happy ending to at least one love story in the movie) but if I wanted real-life, I’d watch the news instead 😛

What impresses me the most about Avalanche Falls is the power in which tit flows through the small gorge. You can really get of feel of it when you stand on the platform that crosses the river.

I like watching Indian love story movies — they are a great way to brighten up a crappy day, or to lift you up if you’re feeling down. But of course, this depends to an extent on the overall story …

I didn’t have much expectations for “Boyfriend for Hire” (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14779470). I thought it would be, at best, run-of-the-mill but probably more cringeworthy. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I was wrong 🙂

At first, the movie had shades of “What Women Want” and I was beginning to wonder where the story would go. Usually, Indian love stories have a predictable arc that follows one of several patterns. But halfway through the movie, they threw a curve-ball that I hadn’t expected. So that was a pleasant surprise.

From then onwards, I wasn’t sure what to expect — was this going to go the usual route from then on? Or was there going to be another twist? (I won’t say more so as to avoid spoilers, but if curious, do watch the movie …)

For me, “‘I love you’ is not a question — but everybody waits for a reply”, is a favourite quote from the movie. I find it thought provoking.

But then, unfortunately, the movie gets a litlte stupid and the melodrama goes into high-gear 😛 This is generally what ruins Indian movies for me. Sure, people do get hurt, they get angry, and they lash out. But when they start doing stupid things because they are angry? OK, that does sound true-to-life too … but still, these are the bits that I find a bit harder to appreciate …

And the dark shaming. The girl they selected to be the “ugly one” is not ugly (not that we should be judging anyone by their looks — who are we to judge if anybody else is pretty or ugly? Doesn’t that act of judging just make us ugly?). She is a beautiful girl, but she isn’t “fair” like the “pretty” ones (according to some standards). I found that particular portion annoying and the movie dropped a bit in my estimation due to it, even though I understand the intent behind it.

Overall, I enjoyed the movie, and thought it had some thought-provoking bits (either intentionally or unintentionally) but in the end, this one’s not one of my all time-favourite love stories …

Deck View

2023 03 19-21 day 269-271 of doing art every day for a year (mostly – I took sick days off).

I loosely followed another Tatyworks video. I, of course, went a bit rogue. In particular, including a couple of Ogopogo.

Rose-Ringed Parakeet

2023 03 10-11, 18 day 266-268 of doing art every day for a year (mostly – I took sick days off).  Seven day gap in there – I was sick. Again. Because this is apparently how I roll now.

Today, I’m painting a rose-ringed parakeet. This species of parakeet is common in Sri Lanka. In fact, in one house we lived in, we had a neighborhood pack of these parakeets numbering at least 50. They loved the orchid tree we had in front of our house. They loved hanging around on the banana plants and the dead tree in the next door lot, too. I loved watching them and hearing them chatter.

King Fisher

2023-03-09 day 265 of doing art every day for a year (mostly – I took sick days off).

I decided that today, I would do my own thing while applying the lessons from yesterday’s tutorial. Today’s subject is a king fisher. This bird was a frequent visitor to our house in Sri Lanka, so I feel a bit of affinity for the bird.

I didn’t do things exactly the same as yesterday’s digital painting, of course. Nevertheless, it is done and I’m quite happy with the results.

Parrot

2023-03-07/08 day 263/264 of doing art every day for a year (mostly – I took sick days off).

This is a watercolor tutorial by Joel Create. I like learning different techniques and styles, and I want to learn better watercolor techniques, so this was perfect.

I had fun! I want to become better at digital watercolour anyway, and Joel’s tutorials are always good. I loved painting this bird and I’m happy with the result.

Desert Sunset

2023 03 05/06 day 261/262 of doing art every day for a year (mostly – I took sick days off).

Today is a migraine day along with tonnes of joint pain, especially in my fingers and left arm. Did I sleep wrong? Is it just that kind of day? Yeah, I dunno. It is what it is. At least the migraine isn’t that bad compared to my teenage years migraines.

This piece just did not work for me, though. I can’t get it right. So I’m taking a break and will finish another day. I’ll do another post when it’s finished. Whenever.
