I'm a bit of an eclectic mess 🙂 I've been a programmer, journalist, editor, TV producer, and a few other things.

I'm currently working on my second novel which is complete, but is in the edit stage. I wrote my first novel over 20 years ago but then didn't write much till now.

I post about #Coding, #Flutter, #Writing, #Movies and #TV. I'll also talk about #Technology, #Gadgets, #MachineLearning, #DeepLearning and a few other things as the fancy strikes ...

I’ve been guilty of throwing the words “AI” around myself, but the more I hear the term nowadays, the more annoyed I get because there is no “AI” in these systems. Sure, they might be “Artificial”, but they certainly aren’t “Intelligent”! Not by any stretch of the word ….

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2023/03/05/ai-voice-scam/

The actual story is worth reading to understand what kind of new scams and threats you can expect with these developing technologies, but I really do wish people would stop calling everything AI ….

“Diablo IV” is coming … soon 😛

We (my wife and I) are avid “Diablo III” players and we were sure we’d get the game, but what we weren’t sure about was whether we could play couch co-op on “Diablo IV” or not. The game listing on the PlayStation store does not mention couch co-op and that was what was keeping us from pre-ordering since if there was no couch co-op, we won’t enjoy the game as much since we want to play together 🙂

Since the first beta release will happen in a few weeks time, I decided to do some checking online yesterday. Found this Reddit post which seems to indicate that couch co-op is indeed there:

https://www.reddit.com/r/diablo4/comments/zh2yho/will_diablo_iv_on_console_have_couch_coop/

Of course, a post online by an unknown source is no guarantee that couch co-op will indeed be there, but we were hopeful enough to go ahead and pre-order. Now we wait and see if it is indeed as promised or we’re going to end up being disappointed 😛

In the 18th and 19th centuries, some British smugglers left tubs of brandy on the beach for others to collect. One method of hiding the tubs was to cover them with plaster of Paris so that they looked like pieces of fallen cliff.

@AngelaPreston Sounds like a rather emotionally draining week. I’m sorry that your friends are going through all that but am glad that things were better than they’d seemed at first …

Red Flowers In Emroidery

2023-02-09/10 day 237/238 of doing art every day for a year (mostly – I took sick days off).

This was a Tatyworks tutorial using brushes that mimic embroidery stitches. The brushes and background image are provided by her at no cost at the link for her tutorial.

This was fun and definitely something a bit different than the usual.

Years ago, and by years, I mean decades, when I was a wee child, my grandmother taught me embroidery. I learned the basics and enjoyed it, but didn’t really take it any further. My other grandmother taught me crocheting, and I knitted, too, and have many friends who are prolific knitters and crocheters. About twenty years later, I took up cross stitch for a brief time period. I have friends who are avid cross stitchers and can do brilliant stuff. Embroidery and other fibre arts are no longer possible for me with my vision problems along with arthritis and unstable dislocating fingers. But this, using an iPad and Procreate, I can do. And this project took me back to some fond memories of my grandmothers.

2023-02-07/08 day 235/236 of doing art every day for a year (mostly – I took sick days off).

Yes, I'm catching up on my backlog of posting.

No tutorial for this one. This is more playing with oil brushes.

Love Heart

As opposed to a hate heart or something? Yeah, I dunno.

2023-02-02 day 230 of doing art every day for a year (mostly – I took sick days off).

I did this one on a whim. Valentine’s Day was coming when I did this so it seemed like something to do. And it was fun! I am, of course, a month late posting this.

It’s a difficult week at Thoughtworks. Some of my colleagues are now looking for new opportunities.

If you’ve worked with us before you know what we’re capable of.
And if you haven’t yet, well, my colleagues are the brightest, most talented people I've had the privilege to work with.

If you have open roles for developers, BAs, XDs, product people, or any shaped technologist especially in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, or remote - please share them with me so I can pass them along to affected coworkers.

It took 3 whole hours of wandering around the blazing hot saltpans just south of Bangkok, but I’ve finally clapped eyes on one of the most endangered shorebirds in the world: the SPOON-BILLED SANDPIPER!! 🥄🥄🥄

After a conversation with somebody on here about Mastodon clients and filtering, I cleaned up my JavaScript Mastodon client code and put it up here:

https://github.com/FahimF/FediJS

It’s pure JavaScript — no libraries, no dependencies … except for FontAwesome and BootStrap. And my original aim was to keep the code simple and uncomplicated.

It doesn’t do much at the moment except to allow you to connect to a Fedi server and to fetch posts (and maybe favourites and bookmarks? I forget …)

I was fixing an issue in my variation of Tusker today (where going several levels deep into a conversation would cause a crash) and I realized just how far I’d have to go to get the JavaScript client to that level. It probably would be easier in some respects and having the code as JavaScript would mean that it would run on so many different platforms, but do I have the fortitude to work on yet another client?

I’m not sure … But I do feel the itch to actually finish the JS Client … I guess we’ll see …

@AngelaPreston Maybe this will sound judgemental (it’s not meant to be), but I just don’t understand the amount of chaos caused by alcohol. I don’t drink. I have never had a drink that I know of (unless it was accidentally mixed with food or something that I didn’t know about).

So I’m probably not the right person to understand the situation. And yet, I constantly am surprised by how much people seem to love drinking and yet can’t seem to know when they’ve had enough. But as I said, I’m probably not the right person to understand this …
