I'm a bit of an eclectic mess πŸ™‚ I've been a programmer, journalist, editor, TV producer, and a few other things.

I'm currently working on my second novel which is complete, but is in the edit stage. I wrote my first novel over 20 years ago but then didn't write much till now.

I post about #Coding, #Flutter, #Writing, #Movies and #TV. I'll also talk about #Technology, #Gadgets, #MachineLearning, #DeepLearning and a few other things as the fancy strikes ...

My favourite from a very cold morning in July 2014. These have been very good earners for us as stock and prints.

Winter at Lake Wanaka, Otago, New Zealand, with birds roosting in the single tree and mist rising from the water.

Hey!

I was recently laid off and I need help finding a new job. I'm a (primarily) PHP dev with experience in ETL, consuming APIs, writing docs, and some amount of experience with refactoring legacy code and building APIs.

I'm looking for a remote, mid-level position where I can continue to learn and grow as a dev and human, within a team of other devs.

I prefer working with PHP, but I'm open to other programming languages.

I also contribute to the PHP manual when energy permits.

My name is JΓΌrgen, and I translate old German folk tales into English - not just tales from the Brothers Grimm, but from the hundreds of other 19th century German folklorists out there.

To date, I have translated more than 440 tales. You can learn more about my project here (and you can get a free ebook version of my first book if you subscribe to my newsletter there):

Elijah McCoy was born in 1844 in Ontario to formerly-enslaved parents from Kentucky. They saved enough to send him to Scotland to study mechanical . When he returned and couldn't get work in his field, he took a job as a train oilman and invented a method of automatic lubrication that eliminated the frequent stops trains had to make to oil up axles & bearings. Railroad companies asking for his product rather than copycat devices spawned the phrase "the real McCoy."

Charles Henry Turner was a pioneer in entomology - and he couldn't get a job in higher ed, so he taught high school biology.

"Across his distinguished 33-year career, Turner authored 71 papers and was the first African American to have his research published in the prestigious journal Science."

His simple but elegant experiments in public parks revolutionized understanding of bees.

Loved drawing and painting every detail of this composition. Inspired by a very special garden. Fine art prints, home decor, gifts available in my shop. 🎨 https://society6.com/elizabethkennenwatercolors

Some good news about western (not the ones that @migrate to @Mexico):

β€œVolunteers who visited sites in and around Thanksgiving tallied more than 330,000 butterflies, the highest number of these counted in the last six years. It was a promising rebound after the annual winter count in 2020 recorded fewer than 2,000 butterflies.”

As noted in the article, though, this isn’t thanks to better practice.
