Today is the 7th anniversary of the launch of my debut book, a space opera novella called "The Warrior Within”, published by Tor.com.

It wasn’t a huge seller, but I'm still fond of it. And I'm currently working on taking the story that it tells further …

@f The image is by an artist called Martin Deschambault. I thought he did a great job. I was particularly pleased because he used elements from the reference photos I sent him -- pictures I'd taken in various places in the world -- in his design. There are bits of Khmer temples, a mosque from Jordan, a stupa from Laos, and probably more all mixed in there!

If you like Martin's work, he has an ArtStation page here:

The cover design is by Christine Foltzer of Tor.com.

@angusm Thank you for the info. I do love good cover artwork 🙂

Never had the money to pay for a good cover artist (the first one I asked about 20 years ago wanted 2K 😛) but would definitely keep Martin in mind should I get to the point where I can afford to pay for cover art.

@f The art was commissioned by Tor.com, who probably have relationships with artists & may get special pricing. It may be easier if you're able to work through a publisher. But if you're self-publishing, there are still a lot of up-and-coming artists on places like ArtStation who might give you a good deal. Pick a few you like & ask around.

And you should always ask for the art you want. A friend just managed to get cover art by his favorite SF artist for the cover of his upcoming book!

@angusm Thanks, Angus. That's good advice. Will try what you suggested. And if you don't ask, you don't get anyway, right? 🙂
