Every /manga fan deserve to be extremely cautious and skeptical about live action adaptations (caveat: that is not named Rurouni Kenshin), especially coming from Netflix.

That said, I'm really exited / have high hopes for the upcoming One Piece show. They have the original creator onboard, world looks colorful and true to the source material, and it seems they nailed the casting. It'll be quite the achievement if they pull it off, adapting one of the big 3 no less. https://youtu.be/lNMSqxQtO0w

Ironically, it was the casting news of Mackenyu as Zoro that sparked my hopes for the upcoming One Piece show. His action sequence performance as the main antagonist was 🔥 providing a believable threat and a moral dilemma in Rurouni Kenshin: The Final. He sounded like the logical choice to play a dude who fights with three swords.

I love how the Straw Hats characters look well "adapted" for live action medium (as opposed to being westernized or plain cosplayed) in the One Piece teaser trailer.

Ooh, the original VA cast of One Piece anime will be playing their characters in the Japanese dub of the upcoming Netflix One Piece live action adaptation. https://youtu.be/CkyvqwzhapQ

I listened to My Sails are Set by Sonya Belousova & Giona Ostinelli with AURORA's vocals. It's apparently the theme for Nami from One Piece (OPLA). It's done such a good job I had to chase away the onion-chopping ninjas.

" ...
I've always been taught to be brave and strong
To see the hope when all feels wrong
I've always been taught not be afraid
And look the price, the price I pay
I'm barely afloat
My sails are set and I'm coming home"

That one scene is going to floor us, isn't it?

One Piece Live Action (OPLA) adaptation from Netflix is set to release in three days and I can't wait.

At the same time, I find it wild that of all the anime and manga out there, the first mainstream live action treatment of a mainstream anime/manga to "get it right" 🤞🏽 will be One Piece.

When someone will inevitably try to adapt Naruto, I hope they will learn from One Piece show runners and approach it with love and respect.

@haliphax ah, that's another one I hadn't thought of. This is why I snuck in "mainstream" twice. I vaguely remember seeing a bit of the live action in 90s. But too young to recall anything. Also learned Edge of Tomorrow was based on a LN. Alita was also OK.

I'm not sure I'd call any of them mainstream outside Japan though. AFAIK, anime became a mainstream awareness in western audiences around Dragon Ball, later with the big 3 (Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach) shonen, followed by Death Note, etc.

Just finished watching the live adaptation on Netflix. It's official now. The curse is finally broken!

Netflix live action is a fun show. Give it a try.

And what perfect casting! From Luffy and the Straw Hats to Zeff and Garp to Mihawk and Buggy, especially Buggy the Clown! I can't say there was any casting that felt lacking. A second season announcement would feel a mere formality.

@gaveen Haven’t finished watching it (well, barely started … since we’ve only watched the first episode) but loving it so far 🙂

Hadn’t seen the original either and so after watching the first adaptation, we’ve decided to give the anime version a try too …

@f that's great. I avoided One Piece anime for the longest time since it had so many episodes plus the art style looked goofy enough. Having heard a Netflix series was coming and fearing the worst, I started the anime. I loved it and really got hooked up at the point OPLA is built as the climax. Since then, I've decided to see the story to the end, at least in the anime form. Hope you like it too.

@gaveen Yeah, the huge number of episodes is daunting, but I’m hoping we like it based on what I’ve seen of the Netflix show and that means that we are set up for a long time in terms of content 😛

The Netflix show had so many laugh-out-loud moments that I’m really looking forward to watching the anime now. Only have season 1 at the moment but if we like that, then I guess it’s truly on 😛

@f 👍🏾 if you are OK to watch with subtitles, I'd recommend the Japanese audio with subs. English dub is not really bad, but it's not in the same league as the Naruto English dub either.
