Watched the WWDC keynote last night and the Apple AR headset (or Vision Pro) is finally here. But ā€¦

My first (and most lasting) impression was one of loneliness.

A father watching videos of his kids, but thereā€™s no family around, heā€™s all alone.

A woman watching movies on a huge screen but sheā€™s sitting all alone in a darkened room.

Even the woman using the headset and having somebody come by seems to be so isolated from everything.

Iā€™m sure this is not what Apple intended, but thatā€™s the lasting impression I got.

I went in hoping that Apple would show something that people could share. Where people can consume entertainment together and just share in the joy of doing things together. But that didnā€™t seem to be what they were aiming for ā€” at least, not with this iteration.

Given the price tag, and the barriers to entry, I think Iā€™ll stick with the Meta Quest 3 for the time being. At least, itā€™s one seventh the price of Vision Pro šŸ˜› Maybe in a couple of years, things will be different?

@f

Right!? I did the math: The original IPhone in 2007 was $599 or $899 in today's dollars. So, the Vision Pro is dropping at almost 4 times that price. Imagine if they had released the Iphone at $2400 (2007 equiv. of $3500)? Would it have been so widely adopted?

This is clearly Apple copying 's Roadster strategy, releasing a prestige product at a premium price, not a populist / revolution. (Yeah, elites!)

@PixelJones The whole Vision Pro strategy seemed to be aimed at doing prestige stuff, honestly šŸ™‚

Like the replaceable head bands, light seals, and audio straps (not sure about the last but Iā€™m sure that the first two can be swapped out) looked very much like Appleā€™s approach to the watch ā€” folks can have luxury elements that cost astronomical amounts and Apple can rake in the cash šŸ˜›

Iā€™m sure in a few years thereā€™ll be (slightly) more affordable items for those of us who donā€™t want to pay through our noses, but weā€™ll always have those feelings of ā€œaspirationā€ to deal with šŸ˜€
