I feel like I heard enough about how twitter people use mastodon wrong and what its spirit is regardless of how it actually works. I'm really struggling to find content that interests me. Most of the content I end up seeing is about MASTODON itself. It's exhausting 😞

@icanzilb I’ve noticed the same - high % of content is about twitter or mastodon. I’ve subconsciously filtered it to some extent.

I’m just starting to subscribe to hashtags and I’m encouraged so far. I just need to get comfortable using them.

@icanzilb

Because there is a lot of discussion about on Mastodon.

You can follow for your interests. But I've to admit, lots of people don't use hashtags properly so their cannot be found.

So if your friends you follow don't share your interests, you're kind of stuck. You'll have to follow a lot of people you hardly know. This will expand your network so you can encounter interesting people.

@icanzilb I agree - I think things will slowly calm down as the huge influx of users from Twitter dies out. And there are always filters and unfollows if needed 😇

@icanzilb have you tried switching to another instance or checking the timeline of some iOS or other subject instances? I found quite interesting people doing they.

This website could also help finding people to follow https://followgraph.vercel.app/

@icanzilb I follow hashtags I’m interested in and devs that I followed on Twitter. Honestly, I don’t feel like I’m missing anything.

@icanzilb I started following hashtags to fill my timeline with interesting people. A lot of tech folk are talking about mastodon so I follow historians and poets and the like. Some are quite interesting. Worth a shot?

@reinoudk @icanzilb Yeah, following hashtags is kinda changing the whole experience for me right about now, deffo something you should do. Too bad that there isn't like a separate tab where you can curate the hashtags you want to follow, currently it's an annoying process via the explore option.

@rabc Well, it seems like people who I followed before are on a dozen different servers now and some keep switching while loosing their content in the process. I'm at a point I'd like to see ads and/or pay if it meant everyone can share in the same place and I can easily stay up to date with what's interesting for me

@Lauren_nicole_roth yeah, worth a try ... mute the mastodon hashtag, follow some tech hashtags... in any case — this service is really built for more localized, siloed experience and this is not what I need 😞

@Migueldeicaza agree. people follow 10 accounts, where 6 are inactive anyway, and expect the algorithm somehow provide content. The twitter no-follow elitist is a cancer

@krzyzanowskim yup, I love my network here, it is just as fun as twitter. Still missing a handful some folks, hoping they’ll join us.

@Lauren_nicole_roth let's explore this a little? As far as I can tell I am following you here. Are you posting? Because I haven't seen any park photos in a month or more. And I loved those photos so I'm not sure - are you still posting them but they don't bubble up on the timeline here so I can see them in my timezone and locale, or not 🤔

@icanzilb since I had my baby I’m not posting as much as I used to. I can’t go to the park every morning like I used to either. Everything changed at the same time i moved to mastodon. Musk bought Twitter when I was in the hospital! Lol I think that’s all it is since there is no algorithm determine what you see. I’m probably just a low frequency on your timeline.

@icanzilb Here are some of the park and Byron begging for a bagel on his way to another park . ❤️ I think we’re now realizing how useful Twitter’s algorithm has been at suggesting and inserting content into the timeline.

@icanzilb You need a bit of timeline pruning 😛 I start filtering people and #hashtags when I start seeing stuff on here that I don’t like to read about. Once you do that and follow a few hashtags of interest, your timeline becomes so much better …

Oh yeah, having the ability to filter replies (in case you use a Fed instance which sends you all replies like mine does) helps too. Why get into other people’s conversations that aren’t relevant to you?

It takes a bit more work, but honestly, except for news (both tech and world — though I don’t care much for the world part) I get more content here than I did on Twitter. And once I get rid of the irritants, it is also much nicer 🙂
