I’m curious, does anybody use (or have ever used) SharePlay?

When it was announced a couple of years back, I was like “This is Apple’s initiative to bring shared media consumption to their AR headset when it arrives!”. But it doesn’t seem to have gone that way? I don’t think I’ve seen much adoption of it …

I can’t use it personally since it requires FaceTime (at least for video, I think?) and FaceTime does not work in the UAE 😛 Plus, our other use case, sharing videos while on a plane wouldn’t work either …

I know some of the streaming service apps have SharePlay integration but I don’t believe the ones I use, Netflix and Amazon Prime, do 😀

So I’m curious, is anybody else using SharePlay a lot (or even a little bit)?

@f I'm quite techy and early-adoptery but I would never even dream of using SharePlay. I've never used it and don't want to use it. Like many younger people, I hate phone calls, so why would I want to be on a call with someone while I am trying to enjoy a movie?

@f It's one of those things I thought was a good idea and I never use it...

@toddunctious Personally, for me the point isn’t the phone call but sharing a movie with somebody. Basically, trying to see if Vision Pro would work for us (my wife and I) in terms of letting us both see the same movie on separate headsets …

Yes, it’s a very niche requirement, but each to their own, right? 🙂

@BobWilliams Me neither, which is one of the reasons I was curious about 🙂 I thought it would be great for watching movies with my wife since that allows us both to have huge screens (instead of a tiny TV) and we generally watch everything together …

But adoption of SharePlay by other developers seemed fairly low to me. Maybe it will pick up after Vision Pro comes out? But then again, that’s a different kettle of fish (or is that can of worms? 😛)

@f never used it for a simple reason: no FaceTime on AppleTV. I don’t consume content on my phone or iPad when I’m on the family couch 😆. The new support of FaceTime on ATV will probably make me use it more 👍

@f I’m old, 39, and I hate talking on the phone, but I love FaceTime. I use SharePlay with my older sister. I like seeing her reactions when we watch stuff because she has the best reactions. She lives 6hrs away. We mostly use with TikTok.

@JBaby You’re not that old when you consider that I’m 53 — it’s all relative 😀

Appreicate the input — you’re the first person to respond who actually uses it. I’m looking at SharePlay for (kind of) the same thing — the wife and I watch everything together but we want to have as large a display as possible since we are old and have old-eyes 😛 So just wondering how well the SharePlay eco-system works in reality. Hence the question …

None of the stuff we generally use for media consumption — Plex, Infuse, Netflix, Amazon Prime — have SharePlay support and so was wondering where all the SharePlay users were. Now I know … TikTok 🙂

@f You’re it is all relative! I’m 40 this year and my sister is 9 years older.

I forgot to mention we’ve also used it to do movie nights. That’s something we couldn’t do unless she came home. The only bad thing about that is not every streaming service supports it.

With that said I’ve only ever used it with her.

@JBaby Well, at least now I know it works relatively well — so thank you🙂 I had no info/data points at all to consider before you responded since I wasn’t sure how reliable/usable it was … Sounds as if it works fine for your own use case.

@f You’re welcome! I suspect I’m in the minority. I don’t anyone else who uses it. And I’m always the one to initiate it in my family.

@f Maybe so? That's a long road before many people are using and can afford that thing. Maybe they just haven't got the experience right yet, or people just aren't aware. I've never actually tried it.
